Introduction
A sample cutting test is one of the most practical steps before buying a CNC cutting machine. It helps confirm tool choice, edge quality, holding method, cutting speed, pocket depth and the overall machine configuration. It also helps the buyer avoid choosing a machine based only on general specifications.
To make the test useful, the machine supplier needs the right information. Sending only a product photo is often not enough. This guide explains what to prepare before requesting a free CNC sample cutting test.
1. Material type
Start with the exact material name. For example: EVA foam, EPE foam, PU foam, rubber gasket sheet, corrugated cardboard, fabric, leather, printed board or other flexible material. If the material has a grade, density, hardness or brand name, include it.
Materials with the same general name may cut differently. EVA foam can vary in density. Rubber sheets can vary in hardness. Fabric can stretch or fray. More detail helps the engineer choose the right tool and test settings.
2. Thickness and size
Provide material thickness and sheet or roll size. For sheet materials, include length and width. For roll materials, include roll width and typical roll length. If the material thickness changes within the same sheet, mention that as well.
Thickness affects tool selection, cutting speed, vacuum holding and whether multiple passes or special tooling may be needed.
3. Finished product application
Explain what the final part is used for. A foam insert for a tool case has different requirements from packaging filler, gasket sealing material, display board or upholstery fabric. The application helps the engineer understand which quality details matter most.
If possible, send photos of the final product or similar parts. A photo can quickly show whether the part needs profile cutting, pocket milling, creasing, V-cutting or contour cutting.
4. Drawing file
A drawing file is the best way to test real cutting performance. Preferred formats may include DXF, AI, PDF or other vector files depending on the workflow. If only a photo is available, send it together with dimensions so the engineer can understand the part shape.
The drawing should include the real size, cut lines, holes, pockets, crease lines or special tool assignments. For printed materials, include artwork and registration mark information if relevant.
5. Quality requirement
Describe what matters most: clean edge, tight fit, fast speed, pocket depth, smooth surface, small holes, fold quality or material savings. Different goals may require different tools or settings.
For example, a foam insert used for a premium tool case may need a very clean visible edge. A protective shipping insert may focus more on fit and production cost. A gasket may need stable holes and accurate dimensions.
6. Expected production volume
Share the expected quantity per order or per day. A sample machine setup for occasional prototypes may be different from a setup for daily batch production. Production volume affects whether automatic feeding, stronger vacuum, multi-tool configuration or additional software features should be considered.
You do not need to provide exact future sales forecasts. A rough range is enough for the first evaluation.
